Wrexham have made an approach to sign free agent Christian Eriksen. The 33-year-old has been without a club since leaving Manchester United following the expiration of his contract earlier this summer. The newly-promoted Championship side, who have gained three promotions in three consecutive campaigns, are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season with a potential move for the midfielder.AdvertisementEriksen’s representative Martin Schoots also told Mail Sport: “Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field, and it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like Michael Williamson there.‘But Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition, and he absolutely wants to stay in western Europe. There are some contacts going on, but it has to suit both sides.”Former Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter, and Brentford man Eriksen has made 650 career appearances, 310 of those in the Premier League. He has scored 55 goals and provided 81 assists in the English top flight and has scored 46 goals in 144 games for Denmark’s national side.In his final season at Old Trafford, Eriksen scored five goals and provided six assists in 35 games, but started just 11 Premier League games. This summer, Wrexham have completed the signings of Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest, Josh Windass on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday, Danny Ward on a free transfer from Leicester City, Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle, George Thomason from Bolton Wanderers and Liberato Cacace from Empoli, the latter being for a club-record fee.The Welsh side begin their Championship campaign with a trip to St Mary’s to face Southampton on August 9.What could Eriksen offerAnalysis by Manchester United writer Carl AnkaThe past two seasons have seen Eriksen make his desire for more playing time very clear to world football. In March 2024, he told Danish outlet Tipsbladet he can grow frustrated when he not regularly performing, and in September of the same year, he assured the same newspaper that his “body is fine, and there are no flaws”.The Denmark international, now 33 years old and several years removed from his cardiac arrest incident during Euro 2020, remains a quality playmaker, spotting passing opportunities in the middle of the park and seizing them well.AdvertisementWrexham are interested in the midfielder for the same reasons Ajax enquired about his availability in summer 2024. Eriksen’s ability to thread balls through congested areas is exemplary. A precise passer, capable of balancing the need for ball retention and progressive passing, and a welcome addition to any dressing room. Wrexham are not a possession-focused side to the same level as Ajax, but Eriksen could have some value as a facilitator, either at the front of their midfield trio, or as a facilitator behind the central striker (similar to how Jay Rodriguez was used last season). However, his off-ball frailties may cause friction with Phil Parkinson’s Best XI. Eriksen is not the most defensively minded player and is prone to fatiguing quickly in the second half of matches. A 46-match season in England’s second tier provides plenty of playing opportunities for the veteran, but the Dane’s best role for the club would be that of an impact substitute.
