'Disappointed' Mohsin Naqvi Set To Sack Another Pakistan Head Coach: Report

PCB led by Mohsin Naqvi are set to part ways with women's head coach Mohammad Wasim after Pakistan's poor and unlucky ICC Women's 2025 World Cup run in Sri Lanka.

The Mohsin Naqvi-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided not to extend the contract of women’s national team head coach Mohammad Wasim following the team’s underwhelming campaign at the ongoing ICC Women’s 2025 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. According to news agency PTI, which cited a PCB source, Chairman Naqvi expressed disappointment over Wasim’s failure to meet expectations during his tenure.

Pakistan failed to win any of their seven group-stage matches and were among the first to be knocked out of the race for the semi-finals. As of Sunday, they sat seventh on the points table out of eight teams and could finish last depending on Bangladesh’s final result against India.

Fatima Sana’s team was also among the unluckiest teams in the tournament. Due to the political tensions with host India and an arrangement between the PCB, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the International Cricket Council (ICC), their matches were held in Sri Lanka in the middle of the monsoon season.

Three matches were washed out due to rain, including one against eventual semi-finalists England on October 15, where The Women in Green were only a few overs away from winning convincingly. They put up excellent bowling performances in other games, too, but lacked the cutting edge required in these tournaments.

According to the report, Wasim’s criticism has particularly focused on Pakistan’s lack of progress in batting, an area that was expected to improve under a former international batter who represented the country in 18 Tests and 25 ODIs. Additionally, internal concerns were raised about his communication and coordination with other members of the coaching staff.

Appointed last year, Wasim also oversaw Pakistan’s semi-final exit in the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka and a poor run in the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, where the team secured only one win from four games. The PCB is likely to announce a replacement soon, with discussions reportedly underway with potential foreign candidates to take over the role.

The men’s team is also being coached by New Zealand’s Mike Hesson. He hasn’t overturned the team’s trajectory completely, but there have been some positive results to help him keep the job.
