Southampton defender Harley Emsden-James has paid an emotional farewell to the Championship club ahead of his move to Manchester United being officially announced.

The talented 16-year-old is understood to have finalised a move to Old Trafford after becoming the latest youngster to catch the club's eye.

Director of football Jason Wilcox, who worked at St Mary's prior to moving to United, is understood to have played a key role in the deal. Southampton will secure a compensation package for the teenager.

Under Ineos' stewardship, United have developed a reputation signing young talent in low-risk, high-reward deals. They have already maintained that approach this summer by recently securing the signing of young striker Enzo Kana-Biyik from French club Le Havre.

Although United are yet to officially confirm the arrival of Emsden-James, his latest social media post, in which he has thanked everyone associated with Southampton for helping him in his career so far, suggests it is only a matter of time before he is unveiled as the club's latest recruit.

He posted on Instagram: "After nine unforgettable years at Southampton FC, my time with the club has come to an end. I'm incredibly grateful for all the memories made and the amazing people I've met throughout my journey.

"A huge thank you to all the staff who have supported and guided me over the years, to my teammates who've become friends, and to everyone who's been a part of this chapter with me.

"Southampton will always hold a special place in my heart. Onto the next chapter!"

Emsden-James, who will turn 17 next March, will link up with United's academy and attempt to take his career to the next level.
