Trent Alexander-Arnold announced a lucrative new contract with Adidas the day after Liverpool’s last visit to Man City

Trent Alexander-Arnold announced a lucrative new contract the day after Liverpool’s last visit to Man City back in November 2023, having scored - at the time - a crucial goal for his boyhood club against the reigning Premier League champions. What supporters wouldn’t give for a similar turn of events in the next 48 hours.

The England international set tongues wagging last season after taking to the pitch at the Etihad wearing a pair of unreleased white Adidas predators.

At the time he was believed to be an Under Armour athlete, but the change of footwear would precede the announcement the next day that he had changed boots manufacturer and signed a long-term deal with the German sports brand.

A promotional video announcing his switch at the time was laced with Liverpool. Providing the voiceover, Alexander-Arnold said: "It all started for me in 2005, life was football.

“Whenever I had the ball at my feet, I made sure I had those boots on. Istanbul was what really inspired me back then. That game, those players, the boots.

"I'm Liverpool born and bred, I grew up in touching distance of my heroes. You dream of being like them, thinking about it for hours and hours, leaving everything you had on the training pitch.

"The hard work paid off. Madrid was my Istanbul. A dream that became a reality, everything flooded back to 2005 where it all began. Those boots never left my bag. I guess I always knew, I'd be back some day."

Adidas are now releasing the Predator Moments football boots, inspired by the footwear Alexander-Arnold adored as a child. The actor playing the Liverpool vice-captain in the promotional video last season wore the original pair.

The new boots are inspired by legendary Adidas Predator players David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.

And Alexander-Arnold was blown away when shown a pair of the new boots for the first time in a video released by Pro Direct Soccer.

“No, these are actually like, these are literally the boots that I grew up on. That’s not even an exaggeration,” he said. “These are the boots. Ahh my gosh. You actually don’t realise the memories that this boot brings to me.”

Told to examine them further by lifting up the tongue on the right boot, Alexander-Arnold then read out the inscription, ‘Raise the roof here with a goal’, before being told it was the commentary from David Beckham’s free-kick against Greece.

“No, I know what goal that is!” Alexander-Arnold then said excitedly when inspecting the left boot. “For me, the best goal I’ve ever seen. The best goal that’s ever been scored.

“Zidane’s volley (against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League final). By far the best goal ever. Like to do that with your weak foot. You wouldn’t even believe how difficult that is.

“The best players in the world, 100 goes at that with their best foot, and they’re not doing that. Have I (tried to recreate it)? No, I couldn’t dare do that! Are you crazy? I’d pull a muscle!

“Nah, to do that on your weak foot, for me that’s the best goal I’ve ever, ever seen. Like nothing will ever come close to that.

“This genuinely looks like what I used to wear. For sure, I’m keeping multiple pairs of these! For sure!”

We’ll find out on Sunday at the Etihad if Alexander-Arnold will debut the Predator Moments football boots against Man City.

His idol, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was among the stars who used to wear the branded boots. But it will not go unnoticed how the Predator Moments are inspired by two Real Madrid icons, with Alexander-Arnold speaking glowingly of the legendary Zinedine Zidane in particular.

His close-friend, Jude Bellingham, who is also an Adidas athlete, idolised the Frenchman himself and has admitted more than once that such adulation helped inspire his decision to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2023 from Borussia Dortmund. The England international even wears Zidane’s old number five shirt at the Bernabeu.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Alexander-Arnold’s future remains the subject of intense scrutiny and speculation. Real Madrid want to sign him on a Bosman transfer, while they were knocked back by Liverpool in December when making an approach regarding a possible mid-season transfer.

It should not be overlooked that Alexander-Arnold was ‘Liverpool born and bred’ when reminiscing about Gerrard and Istanbul in his Adidas promotional video 15 months ago.

But while it remains to be seen whether he will agree new terms with the Reds or instead join the La Liga giants, this latest video will only fuel the flames further regarding speculation around a possible switch to the Bernabeu.
