Coco Gauff has crashed out of the US Open after a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.

Steve Johnson backed Gauff to beat Osaka, but it was the more experienced WTA Tour player who came out on top.

Osaka needed just 64 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium to beat Gauff, who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open.

The former has now stormed into a first quarterfinal in New York since 2020, winning 15 of her 16 points on her first serve and converting all four of her break points.

She is also a previous champion at Flushing Meadows in Queens, winning the US Open title in 2018 and 2020.

What Coco Gauff did immediately after losing to Naomi Osaka at the US Open

Gauff meanwhile, who secured her second Grand Slam title at this year’s French Open, has exited the tournament in disappointing circumstances.

And speaking after the match, former British number one Tim Henman said of the American on Sky Sports Tennis: “Gauff is such a good competitor that you saw at the end of the match. She could not get off that stadium any quicker.

Tim Henman says what must be ‘so exhausting’ for Coco Gauff after her US Open exit

Gauff may just benefit from some time off after her exit, having just continued her very busy season at the US Open.

She was the first to congratulate her opponent despite the defeat and indeed the nature of it, but quickly gathered her belongings before making a rapid exit from Arthur Ashe.

Gauff certainly looked disappointed with her latest showing in front of her own fans, but it has been a superb season from the American so far.

The 21-year-old has taken her WTA titles tally into double figures, although she did part ways with coach Matt Daly just before the US Open.

She also hired biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan in a bid to aid her serving issues, which Henman also discussed post-match.

He commented: “Gauff has been trending in the wrong direction. It has been so hard with the serve and those frailties on the forehand side.

“To be in the centre of the storm that the intense spotlight of playing in your home Grand Slam with those struggles going on, it must be so exhausting and today she came up against a world-class player, who is a Grand Slam champion, Osaka was able to take advantage of that.”

But while Gauff will be frustrated with her underwhelming display, Osaka deserves huge praise for her performance in New York.

She was in top form from the very first game, and gave her opponent very few chances to get any edge throughout their match.
