League One: Wrexham's advantage in second cut after Wigan Athletic draw

Wrexham's lead over third-placed Wycombe Wanderers in League One was cut to just one point after Phil Parkinson's side were held to a goalless draw with Wigan Athletic.

The Latics shaded what was a largely uneventful opening half, with Maleace Asamoah curling wide for the hosts at the Brick Community Stadium.

Midfielder George Dobson fired wide at the other end as both sides went into the break having failed to register a shot on target.

The visitors appealed in vain for a penalty after Ryan Longman's cross hit Luke Robinson shortly after the interval as Wrexham improved.

But Arthur Okonkwo produced a fine save to deny Asamoah shortly after the hour mark before keeping out an Owen Dale effort.

Parkinson - fresh from being named League One Manager of the Month for March - sent on Steven Fletcher, Elliot Lee, Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott as Wrexham, who are second in League One, pushed for a winner.

But they ended the contest without a single effort on goal, although they stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches as the points were shared.

Wycombe's last-gasp victory over Stevenage at Adams Park moved the Chairboys to within a point of Wrexham with just four matches of the season remaining.

Wrexham's result also ensured Birmingham City clinched the third tier title ahead of their Football League Trophy final contest against Peterborough United at Wembley on Sunday.

Ryan Lowe's Wigan - now winless in six league games - sit 17th in the table ahead of the remaining Saturday fixtures.
