Wrexham have completed a big money signing on deadline day, costing Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac £6.5m.

This summer has been Wrexham’s biggest ever in terms of spending. So far, Wrexham have spent £30m on new players, with the club smashing their transfer record multiple times.

In August, Wrexham paid £10m to sign Nathan Broadhead, who became the club’s biggest ever signing in the process. Soon after, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac splashed another £8m on signing Callum Doyle from Manchester City.

And on deadline day, Phil Parkinson’s side have completed a deal to sign Ben Sheaf.

Wrexham sign Ben Sheaf from Coventry City

Ahead of deadline day, it was reported that Wrexham had made a bid to sign Sheaf from Coventry City, in a deal worth around £6.5million. The 27-year-old has an incredible 177 total appearances for the Sky Blues, with nine goals and 11 assists along the way. He also has 161 total Championship appearances under his belt.

After it was reported that Sheaf was undergoing his medical at Wrexham on deadline day, Wrexham then confirmed the signing on their official club website. Sheaf has signed a three-year deal with the club and becomes their 11th signing of a brilliant summer transfer window.

Wrexham’s statement reads: “Wrexham AFC are delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder Ben Sheaf from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee pending registrations and international clearance.

“Sheaf, 27, has signed a three-year deal at the Football Club with the option for a further year.

“The former Arsenal academy graduate first moved to Coventry in 2020, signing initially on loan before a permanent switch the following season.

“He played 176 matches for the Sky Blues – including scoring in the thrilling FA Cup defeat to Wrexham in 2023. He also played in the Championship play-off final at Wembley later that same season.”

Wrexham player could become a forgotten man before he’s even played

The centre of midfield has seen a lot of work done at Wrexham this summer. Lewis O’Brien is the main man in the middle following his £3m move from Nottingham Forest, and then there’s still Ollie Rathbone to return from injury too.

And Parkinson signing Sheaf may be a worry for summer signing George Thomason. Thomason joined Wrexham from Bolton Wanderers on a permanent deal earlier in the summer, but he’s yet to make his debut for the club owing to a thigh injury picked up going into the season.

With the likes of Matty James impressing, along with George Dobson and O’Brien keeping a spot in the side, Thomason faces falling down the pecking order once Sheaf arrives, and then when Rathbone returns from injury too.

But for Parkinson and Wrexham, it’s great to have so much competition and depth in the side, and Wrexham’s win against Millwall last time out will hopefully see them pick up some momentum.
