Rishabh Pant returns to India’s Test squad for the South Africa series after injury rehab, replacing N Jagadeesan

Rishabh Pant is set to make his comeback in Test cricket after more than 100 days. The star wicketkeeper-batter will be named in India’s squad for the 2-match series against South Africa, beginning November 14 in Kolkata. Pant suffered a toe injury on the first day of the Manchester Test while facing Chris Woakes. Though he returned the next day to bat and even scored a fifty, he was eventually ruled out of the tour to undergo rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

According to PTI, the national selection committee is likely to finalise the squad on Tuesday, with Pant replacing N Jagadeesan — the only expected change from the team that faced the West Indies earlier this year.

Pant has undergone a full recovery and successfully proved his match fitness by leading India A in their recent four-day encounter against South Africa A at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. His impactful 90-run knock in the second innings guided India A to a memorable win while chasing 275, reinforcing his readiness for international cricket.

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill, along with Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, are currently in Australia for the ongoing five-match T20I series, and will join the Test squad once the series concludes on November 8.

Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has already been released from T20I duty after the third match in Hobart to feature in the second India A four-day game starting November 6, ensuring adequate red-ball preparation.

The two-Test series will mark an important phase in India’s World Test Championship (WTC) campaign. The first Test will be held in Kolkata, followed by the second in Guwahati, which will host a Test match for the first time in history.

India currently sit third on the WTC table with 61.90% points, while South Africa are fifth with 50%, following their 1-1 series draw in Pakistan.
