Daniel Giansiracusa has joined Hawthorn as its new Head of Development.

The former Western Bulldogs star spent the last six seasons at Essendon, where he was tasked with a number of different coaching portfolios, including backline coach, and more recently midfield coach.

After transitioning into coaching following a 265-game career, Giansiracusa quickly established himself as one the league’s most promising coaches claiming the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020.

Executive General Manager of Football Rob McCartney said Giansiracusa’s appointment was a significant one for the club.

“Daniel’s role as Head of Development will be a very influential part of our team next year and beyond,” McCartney said.

“One of his obvious strengths is building great relationships with his players. He not only has a clear understanding of the development needs, but also has a proven ability to design and lead programs that will make our players better.

“Daniel brings a breadth of experience and knowledge, not dissimilar to when Sam Mitchell held the role as Head of Development as an aspiring AFL Senior Coach.

“We’re really excited to welcome Daniel and his family to Hawthorn, he’s high-calibre person who will bring many strengths to our club.”

Hawthorn will announce further changes to its coaching lineup in due course.
