Liverpool forward Diogo Jota passes away at 28 in road accident

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota passed away on Thursday in a car accident at the age of 28, the Portugal national team confirmed through a statement on X.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain,” the statement read.

“The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to observe a minute of silence this Thursday before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship,” it added.

Reports from Spain suggest the Portuguese forward and his brother, Andre Silva, were involved in an accident in the city of Zamora in northwestern Spain just days after his wedding. He is survived by his wife and three kids.

“Two young people die in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responds,” Zamora’s Provincial Council said in a statement.

“The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”

Born in Porto, Jota started his playing career through Paços de Ferreira’s youth setup before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016, followed by a loan spell at Porto and a transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

“FC Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks. Rest in peace,” Porto said on X.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss,” Liverpool said in a statement on its website.

But it was at Liverpool that he had his best professional stint, winning the FA Cup and League Cup under manager Jurgen Klopp before being victorious in the Premier League under Arne Slot in the 2024/25 season.

The 28-year-old was also part of the Portugal squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Andre, 26, was also a professional football player, plying his trade for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.
