Things are unraveling quickly in Miami for Mike McDaniel. The Dolphins were embarrassed by the previously one-win Cleveland Browns in a 31-6 loss on Sunday, and their backup quarterback, Quinn Ewers, wasn’t getting much love from the coach either. With 7:01 remaining in the fourth quarter and the offense struggling as they faced a fourth-and-15, the television broadcast panned over to McDaniel, who appeared to give the rookie out of Texas the cold shoulder as he came over the sideline after replacing starter Tua Tagovailoa with the game out of reach.McDaniel’s frustrating body language toward the rookie came immediately following Ewers’ first drive in the NFL, which resulted in a three-and-out after he completed 1 of 2 passes for minus-2 yards and then fumbled the third-down shotgun snap. The Dolphins were forced to punt after the fumble as Ewers struggled in mop-up duty in an embarrassing Miami loss that dropped the team to 1-6.Ewers threw for 53 yards and went 5-for-8 in his NFL debut.Former Jets top draft pick Zach Wilson was demoted from second on the depth chart to the emergency third QB role, while Ewers moved up and got some game action.McDaniel had some ominous comments after the game that some had speculated were related to Tagovailoa.“If you are negatively affecting the football team routinely, then I have no choice but to assess a new player. I also have to coach better,” McDaniel said postgame.Tagovailoa went 12-for-23 for 100 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions against the Browns in a windy, rain-soaked game in Cleveland on Sunday.Miami runs into Atlanta for a Week 8 tilt, but it remains to be seen if McDaniel will actually be with the team as his hot seat reaches scorching levels in South Beach.
