Liverpool's next signing gets prematurely 'confirmed' by Gary Lineker after Florian Wirtz arrival

Liverpool have already bought Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz this summer, but Gary Lineker seemed to prematurely announce a third signing who hasn't actually joined the club yet

Despite there being no official word from Liverpool, former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker rather prematurely announced that Milos Kerkez has joined the Reds.

The Hungarian defender is understood to be close to a move to Anfield, but he is yet to even undergo a medical ahead of his proposed £40m transfer from Bounemouth.

Last summer, Federico Chiesa was the only player to arrive at the club. But following Liverpool's Premier League title triumph, Arne Slot has been able to splash the cash.

Having signed Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5million, the Reds then announced the capture of his old team-mate Florian Wirtz on Friday evening for a Premier League-record breaking £116m.

Meanwhile, a move for Bournemouth defender Kerkez is believed to be close, as a medical is due to take place in the coming days. However, Lineker suggested that a £40m deal for the young defender was already totally wrapped up.

On Sunday's instalment of The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said: "Liverpool have been impressive so far with the signings they have done. They have just completed Florian Wirtz for £116m, that's a lot of dough, from Bayer Leverkusen, but he's a wonderfully talented player."

He then prematurely said: "Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for around £40m. They join Jeremie Frimpong, who signed a couple of weeks ago, all three worth just under £200m."

While it seems unlikely that a move for Kerkez will collapse, if it does, it would not be the first time Liverpool's move for a top target has fallen through in the final moments. Back in the summer of 2018, Liverpool supporters were left disappointed when the £58.5m signing of Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir fell through at the eleventh hour.

The club had agreed on a fee for the French player and had even settled personal terms with him. However, a purported problem with his knee, that was detected during the medical, led to the deal falling apart.

Fekir, though, has previously spoken about the peculiar situation, asserting that he passed his medical and didn't understand why the transfer couldn't be finalised.

Liverpool fans will certainly be hoping that Lineker's confident assertion hasn't put a curse on Kerkez's transfer.

The defender scored two goals and provided six assists in 38 Premier League matches from left-back last season. And his signing would push Liverpool's spending over the £200m mark for the summer already, if goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is included in this year's figures. This is believed to be the case despite a deal for the shot-stopper being agreed with Valencia last year.

Kerkez's likely arrival has placed doubt on the future of Andrew Robertson, who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. It's also thought that the Reds are far from done with their business in the summer transfer window.

They have also been linked with significant moves for Crystal Palace central defender Marc Guehi and Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak.

Reports from The Telegraph suggest that Slot's team are keen to sign the latter, who contributed 23 Premier League goals and six assists in 34 appearances last season.
