Mikel Areta may welcome Noni Madueke to Arsenal this summer

Chelsea may hope that Noni Madueke is the latest in a long line of stars who leave for Arsenal and struggle to make a major impact. Personal terms are said to have been agreed between the winger and the Gunners, with the Premier League rivals reportedly set to discuss a potential fee. Several players have departed Chelsea for Arsenal in recent years, perhaps believing they were moving on to better things. But for Kai Havertz, Jorginho, Willian, Raheem Sterling and Petr Cech, the grass has not always been greener. Only Havertz has had anything like the influence the north Londoners might have hoped for. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

None of those quintet have been missed at Stamford Bridge - and it is unlikely that Madueke would be either. Competition for the wide positions is strong, and there are Blues players who can replace the England international’s output. Arsenal are likely to pay a huge fee for Madueke, with Chelsea widely reported to want in the region of £50million. That is despite the 23-year-old’s best position on the right wing occupied by Three Lions team-mate Bukayo Saka, who rarely finds himself out of Mikel Arteta’s starting 11. Madueke might find himself competing for a place on the left, where Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard also play. However, both of those players have been linked with exits. It will be an expensive deal for a player who might not immediately be one of Arsenal’s best performers.

Noni Madueke has been strongly linked with Arsenal

As it stands, Chelsea are getting the better deal, as they have with many of the players they have sold in recent years. Two years after Madueke arrived at Stamford Bridge, the Blues could be about to make at least £20m in profit on the £30m they paid to PSV for his services. That will aid Chelsea’s ongoing battle to avoid financial punishments both domestically and in Europe. Despite accruing a fine from UEFA last week, the west Londoners could face a more severe issue after being told that further penalties could be sanctioned if they do not make a transfer profit this summer. Chelsea have been told by European football’s governing body that they will be blocked from registering new players for the Champions League if they do not make a transfer profit. After big-money deals for Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, moving on Madueke to Arsenal for £50m will be considered excellent business.
