Dan Burn insists he has “no animosity” towards Alexander Isak despite his efforts to force a £125 million transfer to Liverpool, even as a boyhood Newcastle fan.Burn came through the academy ranks at Newcastle and, after a senior career that began with Darlington and took him to six other sides, he rejoined his boyhood club in 2022.He is now a key player for Eddie Howe’s side and was therefore front and centre throughout the saga over Isak’s eventual move to Liverpool. While Newcastle supporters have disowned their former No. 14 after he made himself unavailable in the months leading up to his British record switch to Anfield, the same cannot be said of his former teammates.“I am glad it is done. We wanted the transfer window closed to have a bit of clarity on it,” Burn told reporters at an England press conference on Friday, per BBC Sport.“I have been in football long enough to understand that for a player, the careers are short and they have got things they want to achieve.“Alex is a mate and it is a tough situation because you want him to be around and helping the team, but also understand for him what he needs to do personally.“I have nothing but good wishes for Alex.“No animosity. As a Newcastle fan, we are very protective of our club and city and we want players to be there who want to play for Newcastle.“And you don’t want them to naively think that there is anywhere else to go apart from Newcastle. So I understand why our fans are frustrated.“I wish Alex all the best apart from when we play Liverpool, obviously.”Isak’s other well-wishes from NewcastleAs Burn explained, the situation is seen very differently from those close to Isak than it has been by supporters simply following via speculation and daily updates in the press.Burn is not the only one of the striker’s former teammates to wish him well upon departure, either.Writing on his Instagram story on Tuesday, Anthony Gordon explained: “Regardless of the situation and what’s gone on, it’s been a pleasure to play with you.“One of the best chemistries I’ve had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate.“I wish you nothing but the best brother.”Centre-back Sven Botman, who joined Newcastle in the same summer as both Burn and Isak, wrote on his Instagram story: “What started off as teammates grew into one of my rare best friendships.“No more words needed brother, all the best in your next chapter.”Winger Anthony Elanga arrived at St James’ Park earlier in the transfer window and is currently on duty with Isak as part of the Swedish national team.Elanga told Fotbollskanalen: “It’s his choice. He chose Liverpool. Good luck to him.“He is a friend to me and a fantastic footballer. I can play with him in the national team and that is good as well.”
