Joan Laporta Reveals What Marcus Rashford Told Him About Man Utd Before Barcelona Move

Marcus Rashford completed his move to Barcelona earlier this week as he signed with the club on a season-long loan from Manchester United. Barca also have the option to buy the Englishman for a fee believed to be worth £26m.

Rashford said after making the move, per the Guardian: “I want to win the biggest trophies and feel like Barcelona is a huge club in the football world so it is the perfect place. It’s a club where people’s dreams come true and they win big prizes. And what the club stands for really means a lot to me as well. It feels like home and this is a big factor in my choice to come here.”

The 27-year-old, who has chosen the number 14 shirt also worn by his hero, Thierry Henry, has already trained with his new teammates and is set to play a part in the club's upcoming pre-season tour of Asia.

Rashford joined Man United at the age of seven. After 20 years at the club, it looks almost certain he has played his last match for the club.

He spoke about the Red Devils at his Barcelona unveiling, telling reporters: "The situation with Manchester United is that the club is going through a period of change, and they have been for a while. I don’t have anything bad to say about Manchester United. It has been an important part not only of my career but of my life, so I am grateful for the opportunity to play for them.

"But football is the same as life, not everything goes as simple as you may have thought. This is my next step, my next chapter. I'm fully focused on this and trying to improve myself and help the team win trophies elsewhere. I don't have anything to say about Man United, I just wish them all the best and hope they are successful in the future. I'm focused on here and ready to play and experience this club."

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has now revealed the admission that Rashford made to him about United during contract negotiations. He said, per Mundo Deportivo: "We’re very pleased because we’re bringing in a player of outstanding quality, at a great age to join Barça, and with exceptional motivation.

"I’ve personally seen just how excited he is about coming here. One of his greatest virtues is his sincerity. His dream was to play his entire career at Manchester United. He joined them at age seven and built a meaningful life there. He wanted to be a "one-club man." It’s heartwarming when a player says that so openly.

"But when something happened in his life that he didn’t expect, he looked toward the team he had always admired — Barça. He had faced us before and already had Barça on his radar. He was loaned to Aston Villa to showcase that he’s the best player of his generation, the best in England, and he now says his greatest motivation is to win the Champions League with Barça and the World Cup with England."
