Manchester United’s goalkeeping troubles were catapulted back into the spotlight during their Premier League opening day defeat to Arsenal on Sunday. André Onana dominated the discourse pre-match with Ruben Amorim omitting the Cameroon international from his squad. Onana hadn’t featured in pre-season for United and only recently returned to full-training so Altay Bayındır was entrusted to start at Old Trafford. The Turkish international has failed to truly convince since joining United and he made a terrible error for Arsenal’s winning goal.

Amorim defended Bayındır post-match and insisted Onana wasn’t dropped but United badly need a dependable number one, as Gary Neville insisted post-match. The Italian is available this summer after PSG decided to sign Lucas Chevalier and Gianluigi Donnarumma is surplus to requirements. The 26-year-old was instrumental to the French club winning their first ever Champions League title and he was extremely critical of PSG in a damning statement. Donnarumma remains the joint-most valuable goalkeeper in the world at €40m and it would require a significant financial package to entice him to Old Trafford as he will also demand a sizable wage. There’s an element of recency bias around the perception of Donnarumma as he wasn’t always impressive at PSG but he is an elite goalkeeper. Whether Man United could afford him or convince him of their project remains dubious with Manchester City also weighing up a move.

Emiliano Martínez missed Aston Villa’s Premier League opener with Newcastle United on Saturday amid speculation over his future, but his absence was due to a one-game suspension carried over from last season. The Argentinian goalkeeper appeared to waive goodbye on his final appearance at Villa Park last season and it’s understood that he wants a new challenge this summer. There’s a legitimate argument that Martinez is slightly overrated after winning the best goalkeeper in the world award twice in a row following his heroics for Argentina at the World Cup. But the 32-year-old is unquestionably a Premier League proven goalkeeper and possesses the personality to play for United.

Andriy Lunin might be the most difficult to obtain from this shortlist as Real Madrid don’t want to sell the Ukrainian this summer. Lunin is firmly second-choice to Thibaut Courtois and it’s been speculated recently that he wants to play regular first-time football. Since joining Madrid from Zorya Lugansk in 2018, Lunin has only made 62 senior appearances in seven years but he remains highly regarded at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Ukranian international famously played in the last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals of Madrid’s Champions League success in 2023/24 season before losing his place for the final. Lunin is an impressive goalkeeper and would understand the pressures of playing for a major club, if he moved from Madrid to Manchester.

Senne Lammens is viewed as the long-term successor to Courtois with the Belgian national team and United have scouted him extensively during his time at Royal Antwerp. Fabrizio Romano has reported that United have agreed personal terms and are likely to submit an offer for the talented stopper. It’s believed that Lammes could be available for under €25m but United will face competition with Inter Milan actively pursuing a deal for the talented goalkeeper. The 23-year-old is viewed as one of the best emerging goalkeepers in Europe but there are question marks over whether he’s ready to step up to a top five league, nevermind one of the biggest clubs in the world.
