NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill has entered a rare and unwanted club in Indian cricket history. On Thursday, during the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, Gill lost his fifth toss in a row, becoming only the fourth Indian captain to lose all five tosses in a five-match Test series. It also marked India’s 15th consecutive toss loss in international cricket — a streak that continues to puzzle fans and players alike. As England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope opted to bowl under cloudy skies, Gill’s coin luck hit yet another low. This is the 14th instance overall in Test history of a team losing all five tosses in a five-match series, and Gill now finds himself alongside three legendary Indian captains who suffered the same fate:Independent India’s first Test captain, Lala Amarnath, lost all five tosses when the West Indies toured India. Windies captain John Goddard won all five tosses, and the visitors took the series 1-0.Just before his World Cup-winning triumph, Kapil Dev endured a tough tour of the West Indies, losing all five tosses to Clive Lloyd. India failed to win a single Test, and the series ended 2-0 in West Indies' favour. The most recent before Gill, Virat Kohli, failed to win a single toss during India’s 2018 tour of England. Joe Root’s England took full advantage and claimed the series 4-1.With the current series delicately poised at 2-1 in England’s favour, Gill will hope to avoid joining his predecessors in another unwanted record — losing the series after losing all tosses. A win in the Oval Test would make India only the fourth team ever to avoid a series defeat after losing every toss in a five-Test series.
