Latest Newcastle United transfer news and gossip as Eddie Howe continues his plans for the summer transfer window

Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt

Newcastle United's summer transfer window could get quite busy over the next few weeks.

The Magpies are currently preparing for the start of the new Premier League campaign that gets underway on August 16 with an away trip to Aston Villa. Before then, United will have a pre-season campaign that sees them take on Celtic, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and a K-League XI.

Away from the action on the pitch, Newcastle and Eddie Howe will be mindful of the summer transfer window that they will look to take advantage of. The Magpies will also have Champions League football to look forward to next term which will help them be able to secure their top targets in the transfer market.

Two new signings have already been confirmed by Newcastle, with Anthony Elanga completing a £55million switch from Nottingham Forest. The Magpies also agreed a deal for Antonio Cordero to arrive as a free agent following his exit from Malaga.

Newcastle will be hoping to secure more new arrivals in the weeks ahead. Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike is a target for United with a bid in the region of £70million already being rejected by the Bundesliga club.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle will make a fresh bid to Frankfurt in an effort to sign Ekitike. In a dream scenario, the Magpies would be able to agree a deal for the striker and bring him to St James' Park before the September 1 deadline.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is also a target for Newcastle. An agreement is yet to be reached with the Clarets, but it's believed the player is keen to sign for the Magpies this summer.

Signing a new centre-back has also been mentioned on the agenda for Newcastle this summer. Marc Guehi has been linked with a move to St James' Park in the past, with the Crystal Palace defender also being tipped to sign for Liverpool this summer.

If Newcastle can sign both Trafford and Guehi, it would significantly strengthen their defensive options going into the new campaign.

In terms of departures, four players have left Newcastle this summer, with Lloyd Kelly, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and John Ruddy all leaving St James' Park. Rumours linking Alexander Isak with an exit are not going away either, but in a dream scenario the Magpies would go on to sign Ekitike and keep Isak for the campaign ahead.
