Former major semifinalist claims Jannik Sinner said something 'absurd' in his press conference after winning Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner was the class of the field at SW19 in 2025, picking up his fourth Grand Slam title.

The world number one travelled to London as one of the pre-tournament favorites, but set foot onto Centre Court for the final as a slight underdog against two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

It seemed as though Alcaraz was well-positioned to win his third Wimbledon title in a row when he won the first set of the final 6-4, but Sinner was not to be denied.

Fighting back, Sinner defeated Alcaraz in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, to win Wimbledon for the first time, taking his major tally to four.

Speaking to the media after one of the biggest wins of his career, Sinner said something ‘absurd’ according to one former Grand Slam semifinalist.

During the latest episode of ‘Becker Petkovic’, 2014 French Open semifinalist Andrea Petkovic shared her thoughts on Sinner’s post-match press conference.

“One interesting thing he said in the press conference, Jannik [Sinner] after winning the final against Carlos Alcaraz, was sitting there and said, ‘I noticed today, too, that there were a few moments where Carlos simply did things better and I’ve already made a mental note of what I still need to improve for the US swing, because Carlos is simply more natural in that regard,” she said.

“I think he meant the net game. That’s how I interpreted it.

“He didn’t say anything specific, but that’s absurd.

“You win a match 3-1, you’re the dominant player, and he’s sitting there, saying, ‘I noticed today there are things Carlos does better, I have to do things differently’.

“I was like, Ok Jannik, Ok.”

Petkovic believes Sinner noted his net game as a weakness in comparison to his rival, and he may well have been right to do so.

The Italian, for as good as he is, still trails Alcaraz by some distance at the net, as the Spaniard’s volleys are a level above.

If Sinner wants to enjoy more Grand Slam success in 2025 and clinch his second consecutive title at the US Open, improving his net game must be a priority.

Who is the favorite to win the 2025 US Open?

Having won the previous three hard-court Grand Slam tournaments, it’s hard to look past Sinner winning his fourth in New York.

He won’t have things all his own way, however, and the chances are Alcaraz will be in contention once more.

Just as Sinner used his French Open final defeat as motivation to win the title at Wimbledon, Alcaraz will no doubt do the same at Flushing Meadows.

Alcaraz will return to the US Open with a point to prove in 2025, after suffering one of the worst Grand Slam defeats of his tennis career last time out.

Entering the tournament as the number three seed, Alcaraz lost to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round, 1-6, 5-7, 4-6.

That result, combined with their respective performances at this year’s Australian Open, further cemented Sinner’s position as the number one hard-court player on the ATP Tour.

It is, however, important to remember what happened in their one previous meeting at the US Open, when they faced off in the 2022 quarterfinals.

Winning a five-set thriller, Alcaraz saved match points against Sinner en route to his first major title.

Whilst Sinner and Alcaraz are the clear favorites, they aren’t the only players in the draw, and several other big names will likely find themselves in contention.

Over recent years, the US Open has proven itself to be the most unpredictable of the four Grand Slam events, as surprise winners aren’t all that surprising.
