Thursday night is a busy one as the Second Round of qualifiers kick off in both the Europa League and the Conference League.

On a packed schedule, there’s plenty of UK and Irish interest as Hibernian take on Midtjylland and St Pat’s fly the Irish Premier Division flag.

FC Midtjylland v Hibernian

Midtjylland to win

We get rolling on Thursday’s action with a trip to Denmark as Hibernian head to FC Midtjylland for the first leg of a Europa League qualifier.

The hosts won three of their four preseason games, including victories over Dynamo Kyiv and Slovan Bratislava, both of whom are in the Champions League qualifiers.

However, they opened their Danish league campaign with a 3-3 draw at home to OB last weekend, but Hibs won just one of their five preseason games.

The Danes endured a mammoth European qualifier run last summer, ultimately losing out on a place in both the Champions League and Europa League. They have more experience in these situations than David Gray’s side.

Besiktas v Shakhtar Donetsk

WHERE: Vodafone Arena, Istanbul

Staying with the Europa League action and there’s a cracker in Istanbul as Besiktas take on Shakhtar Donetsk.

This is a clash that would not look out of place in the Champions League from years gone by – but the UEFA draw have thrown them together, with only one on course for the league phase of Europe’s second-tier competition.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only managed to pick up one preseason win, so there’s not enough edge to back Besiktas for the win, and Shakhtar smashed six goals past Finnish side Ilves in their first qualifiers.

Dundee United v UNA Strassen

Dundee United welcome Luxembourg side Una Strassen to Tannadice Park at the start of their Conference League journey this season.

The visitors fell at the first hurdle in the 2024/25 qualifiers, marking their first-ever European qualification attempt, but they are back for more in 2025/26.

The Tangerines are yet to return to competitive action, but they will still be confident of a win over a minnow on home soil, to boost their overall progression chances.

However, they may be a little rusty in defence, and UNA Strassen found the back of the net in four of their five preseason games.

St. Pat’s v Nomme Kalju

WHERE: Richmnd Park, Dublin

St. Pat’s to win to nil

Wrapping up Thursday’s flutter is Stephen Kenny’s St. Pat’s hosting Estonian side Nomme Kalju in Conference League qualifier action.

Kenny’s side are out of form domestically, with no wins in their last six league games, and they will be looking to bounce back in Europe.

Pat’s won home and away in their first round qualifier clashes with Lithuanian side Hegelmann, with a 3-0 win on aggregate over two legs.

Kenny has his players well-drilled defensively, with a double clean sheet in the above match and three clean sheets in their last six league games.
