KEY HIGHLIGHTS Kris Srikkanth called out a 25-year-old Indian star

Srikkanth called for a change in India's batting unit

The 1983 World Cup-winner labelled the player as overrated

Kris Srikkanth launched a scathing attack on a 25-year-old Indian star after the Rohit Sharma-led team's humiliating series defeat against Australia. As India's batting failures were the main factor behind a 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), the 1983 World Cup-winner was not pleased with Shubman Gill , who played at the all-important number three spot.

Srikkanth did not mince in words and called out Gill as an overrated cricketer. The right-handed batter's struggle in away matches continued as he made jsut 93 runs in five innings with an average of 18.60 with a higher score of 31. The youngster has not made a half-century outside Asia since his famous knock of 91 at Gabba in 2021. Since then, he has played 18 innings in South Africa, Australia, England, and West Indies but has a highest score of only 36.

“I’ve always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer. Gill is right now surviving because he gets ten chances and scores on the tenth chance after nine failures. And because of that, he is getting another ten chances to succeed. Anyone and everyone can amass runs on Indian wickets, The challenge is scoring away from home in SENA countries and that’s where players like KL Rahul pass the test,” said Srikkanth in a video on his Youtube Channel.

Kris Srikkanth Suggests 3 Replacements To Ajit Agarkar

The former India chief selector suggested three replacements to take Gill's place in the side. The list includes no player, who was part of India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) and among the three players, there is a combined experience of one Test match as Srikkanth suggested looking for fresh talent.

“When Gill is getting this much of a long rope, some people might wonder whether even players like Suryakumar Yadav could have been given a longer rope in Tests. Suryakumar didn’t have a very good start in Tests but he has the technique and he has the ability. But the selectors and the management have now boxed him into a white-ball specialist. So that means you have to look at fresh talent.”

Other than Suryakumar, Srikkanth suggested two other Indian batters for selection in the Test team. “Ruturaj Gaikwad, for example, has been doing wonderfully in first-class cricket. But they’ve not bothered to pick him. Meanwhile someone like a Sai Sudharsan has been lighting it up in ‘A’ tours. You have to promote these kind of talents. Instead they are running around circles by picking Gill,” Srikkanth added.
