Paul Pogba is reportedly closing in on a summer move to AS Monaco. The French midfielder, who returned to Manchester United in August 2016 for a record-breaking fee of £89million at the time, is now allowed to return to professional football.

Pogba was banned following a positive test for the prohibited substance DHEA. The 32-year-old left Juventus in November despite having his four-year ban reduced on appeal.

And the 2018 World Cup winner is now free to play again and has been linked with a move to several clubs, including his former team. Pogba would have two spells at Old Trafford, winning the League Cup and Europa League during his second spell, which was characterised by inconsistent performances, before he departed once more on a free transfer in June 2022, joining the Old Lady.

Sky Sports now report that he is expected to formally sign a two-year contract with Monaco today (Saturday), with a club announcement to follow. The Ligue 1 club's first pre-season game is on July 11 against Cercle Bruges, before the squad heads to a training camp in Birmingham on July 13.

Despite coming through the academy at Le Havre, Pogba has never played domestic football in France.

The midfielder was asked, last year, if he missed United during his period away from football. He admitted that he had not thought about the club in that way due to more pressing matters in his life.

"Truly, I had so many problems," he told Sky Sports. "I did not have time to think of Manchester United.

"I needed to get rid of all my problems and play. I watch Manchester United - and I still have teammates there.

"They are still one of the biggest clubs in the world, but wasn't thinking about more stuff."
