Paul Merson drops his 'interesting' Everton vs Man Utd prediction, he would be 'surprised' by one outcome amid 'insanity'

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has spoken out about both David Moyes and Ruben Amorim amid his telling scoreline prediction for Everton vs Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim’s woes at Manchester United continue in the Premier League after Spurs clinched a 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Sunday.

United’s defeat to Tottenham has left the Red Devils languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, with Ruben Amorim’s men managing only eight league wins.

The Red Devils are currently 12 points clear of the relegation zone and United are now a mammoth 15 points adrift from the Premier League top four.

Everton, on the other hand, have seen a resurgence in form since Toffees boss David Moyes made his sensational return to Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche was sacked as Everton manager last month and left the Premier League club in 16th place at the time of his exit from Goodison Park.

Moyes had been out of management since his exit from West Ham in 2024 and the former United manager succeeded Sean Dyche as Everton head coach in January.

Merson on ex-Man Utd man Moyes at Everton

Everton have won four of their last five Premier League matches under David Moyes and the Toffees are one point clear of 15th-place Manchester United in the table.

Moyes had previously managed United after he succeeded legendary former Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford dugout in 2013.

However, the 61-year-old Scotsman failed to see out the 2013-14 Premier League campaign with United after he was sacked from his role in 2014.

Speaking in his Sportskeeda column, Paul Merson claimed that it was now an “interesting sub-plot” for Saturday’s clash due to Moyes coming up against United.

“This game also offers an interesting sub-plot with respect to David Moyes facing his former employers in Manchester United,” he said.

“Although he failed to find success at Old Trafford, he simply had to take that job when it was offered to him.

“The job to replace Sir Alex Ferguson was the pinnacle of football at that point in time and we cannot blame him for taking it up.

“When Moyes came back to Everton after the departure of Sean Dyche, I personally did not think it was the right move.

“But look at the job he has done at Goodison Park so far, simply incredible.”

Merson’s Everton vs Man Utd prediction

Merson insisted that Ruben Amorim must abandon his tactical formation due to him lacking the “right players” and it is “insanity” for him to commit to the system.

The 56-year-old Sky Sports pundit added that he can “never” see a win for United on Saturday and has backed Moyes’ Everton side to win 2-1 at Goodison Park.

“If you look at both Moyes and Ruben Amorim, there’s a lesson here,” Merson continued.

“Moyes is an adaptable manager in the sense that if he were at West Ham with better players, he would adopt a different style of play. But Amorim isn’t like that.

“The Portuguese will keep playing the same way even if he doesn’t have the right players for his system! I honestly don’t know what Amorim is trying to do. It’s insanity because it’s not working at all.

“Manchester United have been all over the place under him and need to come back to a 4-3-3 and try to become solid.

“I’d be surprised if Manchester United win this game. It may even be a draw, but never a win for the visitors in my opinion.”
