A fiery comment from the head of Turkish football has added a new layer of intrigue to the upcoming Champions League clash between Liverpool and Galatasaray.Following the draw for the new league-phase format in Monaco, Turkish Football Federation President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu told TRT Spor that Galatasaray received a favorable draw and that he believes they will qualify for the knockout stages. The most provocative part of his statement, however, was his assessment of Liverpool.“Liverpool is not the old Liverpool,” he was reported as saying by NTV Spor.He continued: “Galatasaray had a good draw. I believe they will qualify from the group… there is Liverpool, but Liverpool is not the Liverpool of the past. In my opinion, they had a good draw.”These comments are unlikely to be ignored at Anfield. The Reds are coming off a triumphant season in which they won the Premier League title under new manager Arne Slot in his debut campaign.Liverpool also bolstered their squad this summer, with a record-breaking move for Florian Wirtz and the signing of Alexander Isak.Hacıosmanoğlu’s remarks will no doubt provide extra motivation for a Liverpool team eager to prove their current strength. The clubs will face off at RAMS Park in Istanbul on September 30, in a match that now carries a personal edge. The two sides last met in the Champions League in 2006, with Liverpool winning 3-2 at Anfield before a 3-2 defeat in Istanbul. This time, with a refreshed squad and renewed ambition, Liverpool will be looking to prove that their new era is just as formidable as their last.
