Liverpool is leading the race for Florian Wirtz's signature - and a deal could be finalized within days.

The Reds have surged ahead in the race for the 22-year-old after Manchester City stepped back from a high-profile bid and Bayern Munich faced the player's rejection.

Bayern's disappointment will undoubtedly be a relief to Bayer Leverkusen, where Wirtz has been showcasing his skills since 2020. The thought of losing one of Germany's most promising attacking talents is already a bitter pill for Leverkusen's top brass, and the prospect of him joining a direct Bundesliga competitor would have added insult to injury.

However, Liverpool turned the tables when they presented their vision to Wirtz, who is reportedly taken with the club's ambition. TBR Football reports that negotiations between Liverpool and Leverkusen might reach a conclusion as soon as Monday. Over the weekend, Bayern president Herbert Hainer revealed that Wirtz seems to prefer a move to Anfield rather than Allianz Arena.

"[Bayern chief] Max Eberl informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool," he disclosed. "I can't say how things will continue with Leverkusen."

While the staggering £126 million ($170 million) valuation placed on Wirtz could prolong discussions, it's believed that Leverkusen might be open to reducing the upfront cost in favour of a deal structured with substantial add-ons.

Liverpool seems to have already secured one signing from Leverkusen, with Jeremie Frimpong's arrival set to be officially announced once the summer transfer window opens. The Dutch wing-back has already passed his medical as he gears up to fill the boots of Real Madrid-bound Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The smooth and swift completion of the Frimpong deal should have fostered a positive relationship between the two clubs, increasing the likelihood of a speedy resolution for Wirtz's transfer.

The young talent, born in 2003, who can operate in the No. 10 role and various other attacking positions, has netted 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen.

He also scored twice for Germany at Euro 2024 last summer.
