Tennis news, Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier underarm serve video, frosty net handshake exchange, Alex de Minaur

Stefanos Tsitsipas' sad slide continued at the US Open on Friday (AEST) as the Greek star blew a match point and then complained about Daniel Altmaier's use of the underarm serve.

Germany's Altmaier prevailed 7-6(5), 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in an epic 4h, 26m second round struggle in New York, as the 26th ranked Tsitsipas was unable to land the killer blow.

Altmaier had hit an underarm serve during his comeback in the fourth set and the tactic clearly got under Tsitsipas' skin as he drilled the ball back at his opponent.

The pair had a frosty handshake at the net as Tsitsipas complained to Altmaier, who got sick of listening and eventually told him to talk to the hand before acknowledging the crowd.

"Next time, don't wonder why I hit you, OK? No, I'm just saying if you serve underarm... if you serve underarm," Tsitsipas said.

The underarm serve is perfectly legal but relatively rare in elite tennis. Some players, including Nick Kyrgios, like to pull it out to catch their rivals by surprise.

Altmaier, ranked No.56, will play Australia's eighth seed Alex de Minaur in the third round. It's a good result for de Minaur - who is 1-11 against Tsitsipas over his career.

But Tsitsipas has had a miserable grand slam season, bombing out in the first round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and the second round at Roland-Garros.

The 27-year-old is a former world No.3 but is yet to win a major title.

De Minaur, meanwhile, made short work of Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki with a 6-2 6-4 6-2 victory.

"Thank you to everyone who stayed. I know it is late. I know it is cold. We got a little bit of rain here, but it was great to hear the Aussies in the crowd," he said.

"I feel great here in New York. It has treated me very well through the years. The more matches I am playing here in New York, the better. That is the plan.

"We are all incredible athletes out here, so I am sure (whoever I play) will be ready for the next match. It is going to be a battle. But all eyes will be on myself to recover and come back for another battle."

De Minaur was also quizzed about his fashion sense in his on court interview.

He wisely gave credit to his fiancée Katie Boulter.

"It is New York and it is pretty hard to go wrong out here. That is what is exciting, instead of having the same colours, the same patterns, you can go out there a little bit more in New York," de Minaur said.

"I've never been a very flashy guy, a guy who wears a brand because of the name itself. It is something that, over the years, I've had to kind of elevate a little bit more since I've been going out with Katie.

"I can't really go out on date night in my sweats, so I have had to elevate my fashion game."
