Thomas on James Maddison’s ACL injury: “It’s devastating”

Thomas Frank sent out his best wishes to James Maddison after our final game of pre-season on Thursday, following the news that the midfielder has ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament.

Madders went down in distress in the closing stages of last weekend’s clash with Newcastle United in Seoul and after evaluation, it was confirmed on Thursday morning that he will undergo surgery.

“I think it’s disappointing but also devastating for me and mainly for Madders that he’s out of the team,” said Thomas, speaking about the England international’s injury in the wake of Thursday evening’s defeat to FC Bayern.

“We will miss him and no doubt he will miss playing football.”

New loan signing Joao Palhinha made his first appearance in our colours in Germany – in a rare occurrence, against his parent club. He played the first half before being withdrawn at the break.

“Today he got 45 good minutes into him so I think that was very positive in many ways,” said Thomas.

“I’m sure he will help the team. The positive also today was (we had) no injuries.”

All roads now lead to Udine, Italy for the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
