‘Hell of an over’: Ben Duckett ‘happy’ to see Harry Brook survive Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery final over at Leeds on Day 2

Despite being castled by Jasprit Bumrah shortly before the end of day two, England opener Ben Duckett could not help but admire and hail the India speedster’s magic final over that nearly got him his fourth wicket on day two of the Leeds Test.

On yet another day where Bumrah stood head and shoulders above his bowling peers, India captain Shubman Gill had to turn to the menacing right-arm pacer every time he needed a breakthrough after Bumrah dismissed opener Zak Crawley in the first over. That was the tone for the rest of the evening as England got off to reduce their 471-run first-innings deficit quickly, speeding past 100 before tea as Bumrah’s fellow pacers Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur leaked runs rapidly.

Turning up for the final over before stumps after rattling Duckett’s stumps earlier in the session and dismissing No. 4 Joe Root in the penultimate over, Bumrah tormented new batter Harry Brook, who survived by a whisker. Bumrah froze Brook at the crease with a magnificent bouncer that had the batter miscue a pull towards Siraj at mid-wicket. However, fortune swung the Englishman’s way as Bumrah had delivered a third no-ball in the over. Bumrah served up another rip-snorting bumper to finish the day, with Brook ducking out of the shot to remain unbeaten on zero off 12 deliveries.

“It’s a hell of an over, you know, watching him do his thing, Jasprit (Bumrah). He’s very good to watch, you know, and Brookie (Harry Brook) just to come off air. He’s not out. So happy days,” said Duckett in praise of Bumrah after being knocked over by the 31-year-old pacer on 62.

The left-hander was, however, content with how England went about the day after triggering a late Indian collapse that had the visitors lose seven wickets for 41 runs.

“Well, I think very good. It could have been a lot worse. I think we took six for 40, maybe, you know, on another 41. Another day, you know, that there’s 600 plus or whatever. So I think starting off like that and then, as I’ve spoken about Jasprit running down the hill there with the lights on, it wasn’t easy against that new ball. So to be where we are, I think we will definitely take the day we’ve had. It’s just about trying to win that first session tomorrow,” Duckett said.

Bumrah emerged as the pick of the bowlers, snapping all three wickets in 13 overs, with England finishing on 209/3, 262 behind India’s total.
