Liverpool is reportedly willing to take a big hit on Darwin Nunez, with the striker expected to leave this summer.

The Reds No. 9 endured his toughest season yet at Anfield under Arne Slot and lost his place in the side. He started just one of Liverpool’s last 21 Premier League matches during the 2024/25 campaign and wasn’t handed additional opportunities after the title was secured, unlike a number of other squad fringe members.

The Uruguayan will probably leave Liverpool this summer, with strong interest from Saudi Arabia. However, he failed to seal a move before the first summer transfer deadline, with Al-Hilal among those reportedly keen to sign Nunez in time to register him for the Club World Cup.

Reports have also indicated interest in Europe. Atletico Madrid is said to be monitoring the former Benfica man’s situation, and there have also been links with a move to Italy.

Corriere dello Sport states Napoli and AC Milan could challenge for Nunez this summer, with Liverpool valuing the No. 9 at around €60 million ($69M/£51M).

That would represent a huge loss on the €100M ($115M/£85M) the club sanctioned for his arrival in 2022.

At the time, it was hoped Liverpool was purchasing one of the league’s brightest young strikers. Instead, Nunez’s penchant for missing big chances and regularly straying offside has become a recurring frustration for supporters.

He netted just one goal in the final four months of the season, with Slot opting to play Luis Diaz in a central role rather than select the club’s record signing.

That fee will be eclipsed by Florian Wirtz when he arrives at Liverpool, with a deal expected to be confirmed this week.

Nunez’s future could also have a huge bearing on the Reds’ next step in the transfer market, with Liverpool wary of balancing the books in what has become an expensive summer.

The 25-year-old hasn’t been involved in the recent round of international action due to an ongoing suspension for Uruguay. His compatriot Luis Suarez was asked for this verdict on Nunez’s situation this week.

"Every time, I try to help him, but his decision is for himself," said the former Liverpool attacker. "He knows what he wants from football and what he wants for his future and his family."
