Two more days are still left before Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to international cricket, but the excitement among fans is already at its peak. The Indian stalwarts, having retired from Test and T20I Cricket, are now limited to ODI cricket. Speculations are rife over their international futures with the upcoming ODI series being hyped as their last on Australian soil.

Meanwhile, Rohit and Kohli hit the nets at the Optus Stadium in Perth ahead of the first ODI against Australia on Sunday. Local fans gathered in numbers to have a glimpse of their favourite superstars sweating it out in the nets.

Kohli last featured in competitive cricket back in June, when he fulfilled his long-cherished dream of winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Since then, he has stayed away from the game, enjoying quality time with his family in London.

Recently, he arrived in New Delhi to join the India ODI squad, led by Shubman Gill, before the team departed for the Australia tour in separate batches.

There was plenty of curiosity around who would turn up for India’s optional training session on the opening day of their limited-overs tour of Australia. According to ESPN Cricinfo, Kohli went through catching drills with great intensity during India’s 20-minute session on the turf, where just under a year ago, he scored his final Test century.

He then spent around 40 minutes in the nets, facing Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and a few local bowlers. Though there were a couple of uneasy moments, he was largely comfortable as he tuned up for what’s expected to be a lively surface in an ODI likely to unfold under damp conditions.

Kohli’s return has undoubtedly amplified the buzz around this three-match series, with his presence alone expected to draw over 50,000 fans to Optus Stadium.
