Chelsea cruised to a 5-1 victory at London Stadium versus West Ham United as the Club World Cup champions showed their class, putting Graham Potter under more pressure in the Hammers’ hotseat.Chelsea thrashed rivals West Ham United 5-1 with five different goalscorers in a brilliant performance to pile the pressure on Hammers’ boss Graham Potter.Despite taking the lead inside six minutes, West Ham collapsed as a young Chelsea side eased to victory at London Stadium. Now, with eight goals conceded across their two matches versus Sunderland and Chelsea, it’s the most goals that they’ve ever conceded across their opening two games of a top-flight league season. The emphatic victory came despite Chelsea being dealt a big blow just before kick-off when the influential Cole Palmer was replaced in the starting XI by Brazilian teenager Estêvão.Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca revealed that Palmer felt muscle soreness in the warm-up, and they removed him from the side as a precaution, making it just the second time that he’s not appeared in a Chelsea stating line-up since the start of last season. With many eyes on Estêvão following his late call-up, it was another Brazilian who provided the first stunning moment of the match, as Lucas Paquetá sent a rocket of a shot from outside of the box past Robert Sánchez to give West Ham the lead inside six minutes. It was Estêvão who gave the ball away cheaply in midfield, attempting a flick that didn’t come off before being intercepted by El Hadji Malick Diouf. The Senegalese defender gave the ball to Paquetá, who worked his magic to score West Ham’s first Premier League goal of the season – just like he did in 2024-25.The lead lasted nine minutes, however, before another Brazilian got himself on the scoresheet. João Pedro, scoring his first Premier League goal in a Chelsea shirt, rose above his marker to nod a header into the net after Marc Cucurella had flicked on an inswinging corner.West Ham thought they’d retaken the lead straight away, as Niclas Füllkrug powered in a shot on the rebound, but Jean-Clair Todibo was deemed offside following a VAR review.Summer signing Pedro turned provider for Chelsea in the 23rd minute, as he sent a teasing cross into the box and Pedro Neto raced in into the West Ham box to meet it with a fantastic side-footed strike that flew past Mads Hermansen. It was his second goal in the Premier League against West Ham in 2025, having also scored in the 2-1 win over their London rivals at Stamford Bridge in February.Chelsea added a classy third goal in the 34th minute. Some excellent hold-up play from Liam Delap gave the ball to Estêvão before the teenager went on a mazy dribble into the penalty area before putting the ball on a plate for Enzo Fernández to finish into an empty net from two yards out. While it was Fernández’s name who went down on the scoresheet, the goal was down to Estêvão’s excellence, and as the creator, he became the youngest player in Premier League history to assist a goal for Chelsea (18 years, 120 days). If the first half wasn’t bad enough for West Ham and Graham Potter, the opening 13 minutes of the second half piled on more misery. Two goals in the space of four minutes from Moisés Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah saw Chelsea become just the third away team to score five times inside the opening hour of a Premier League London derby after Spurs versus Wimbledon in May 1998 and Arsenal against Crystal Palace in November 2024.Despite West Ham’s attempts to reduce the deficit, the remaining half hour saw Chelsea mostly toy with West Ham to shouts of “olé” by the away fans behind the goal. Even though no more goals were added, the victory still saw Chelsea equal their biggest margin of victory in a league game away at West Ham.This defeat leaves Potter with just 20 points across his 20 Premier League matches in charge of West Ham. Only Avram Grant (0.89) has averaged lower as Hammers’ manager in the competition.Potter would have been feeling the pressure following their poor opening-day 3-0 defeat at newly promoted Sunderland, but after this win, and the audible dissatisfaction among their supporters in the stands, it could be a long wait between now and their next league match versus Nottingham Forest next Sunday. Our Opta match centre delivers you all the West Ham United vs Chelsea stats from their Premier League meeting at London Stadium. The match centre below includes team and player stats, expected goals data, passing networks, an Opta chalkboard and more.
