Emma Raducanu’s Grand Slam season has ended with a third-round finish at the US Open following her heavy defeat to Elena Rybakina.

In an incredible display, Rybakina defeated Raducanu 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career.

The defeat for the Briton marks her second loss under the wing of new coach Francisco Roig, with whom she has shown promising signs.

With the Spaniard in her corner, Raducanu enjoyed a much-improved performance against world number one Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open and picked up two dominant wins in New York.

Following her loss to Rybakina, the world number 36 pinpointed where it went wrong and had high praise for the Kazakh star.

Emma Raducanu’s reaction to exiting the US Open in round three

Raducanu could not find an answer for her opponent, who was crushing the ball at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

In her post-match press conference, the British number one said: “I think maybe if I held in the first game of the second set, being 40-0 up, I missed a couple of shots that I wouldn’t normally miss.

“But at the same time, it was like every ball was so difficult that I was receiving, and I was kind of shocked when I got a shorter ball.

“It was difficult, but otherwise I thought I tried to mix it up with my return position, but I thought she served well, returned well and did a lot well.”

Elena Rybakina makes history for her country at the US Open

With her triumph, Rybakina is now the first woman representing Kazakhstan to reach the round of 16 at all four Grand Slam events.

In previous years, she recorded quarterfinal finishes at the French Open, a final appearance at the Australian Open, and earned a major title at Wimbledon.

For a while, Rybakina had struggled to find success at the US Open, tallying multiple early exits since her main draw debut in 2019.

She has now finally reached the fourth round in the Big Apple, however, and will now look to make a deep run at the tournament.
