Shocked Carlos Alcaraz reveals what he said to Taylor Fritz straight after losing to him at the Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz was unable to win his first singles match since the US Open after being beaten by Taylor Fritz.

Alcaraz made history at the Laver Cup last year, including winning the deciding match to clinch the title for Team Europe.

The Spaniard continued his winning ways at the team event in San Francisco, with Alcaraz claiming victory with Jakub Mensik in doubles.

Alcaraz then made his return to the singles court, but it did not go how the world number one would have hoped.

Alcaraz faced a tough opening singles match at the Laver Cup against Team World’s top-ranked player Fritz.

However, he would likely have felt confident heading into the match, with Alcaraz winning all three previous matches against Fritz.

His unbeaten record against Fritz came to an end at the Laver Cup, with Alcaraz being beaten, 6-3 6-2 in San Francisco.

This is just the seventh time Alcaraz has lost in 2025, and first since the Wimbledon final, with the US Open champion reflecting on his performance in the post-match press conference.

In this press conference, Alcaraz also revealed what he told Fritz at the net straight after their match.

“Well, yeah, I mean, it wasn’t the match that I was expecting, but you know, I think I have to look a little bit, you know, to him that I think he played great tennis,” said Alcaraz.

“I just wasn’t as solid as I wanted in the match, and I think these conditions, you know, it’s pretty slow. The balls are really big, so I had to be patient, I had to be solid. I didn’t play that match today.

“So I told Taylor that he played a great match, really solid, playing aggressive when he could. I think everything went to his side, so I had to congratulate him and that he played a much better game than I did.”

Alcaraz continued his honest reaction to his defeat to Fritz at the Laver Cup, assessing why he thinks he lost to the American.

The six-time Grand Slam champion was keen to speak about Fritz’s eagerness to get on top early on in the points, which Alcaraz claimed his opponent did much better than himself.

“Yeah, I feel like he was more on the court than me,” added Alcaraz. “Yeah, I think that the first or second shot of the rally was really important, and I think he did it much better than I did. I think that was the key, because as I said, in these conditions, I think the first shots are really important.

“When you are defending, when you are running on the court, it is really difficult to turn around the situations. It is really difficult when you are defending, turning to attack is really difficult because of the balls and the conditions that are really slow.

“As I said, Taylor was right. He was more aggressive than me. He did much better the first shots than me, and I was running more than him. I think that was the key today.”

Alcaraz’s defeat continued a poor second day of the 2025 Laver Cup for Team Europe, as they lost every single tie.

This means that Team World now lead 9-3 heading into the final day, with Alcaraz and Team Europe now needing to produce an almighty comeback.
