Jamie Carragher finally concedes that there is something 'pretty special' about Arsenal right now

Jamie Carragher has admitted that Arsenal are doing something that is ‘pretty special’.

The Gunners moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, in what was a significant weekend in the title race.

Mikel Arteta’s side eased past Crystal Palace at the Emirates, while Liverpool lost at Brentford and Unai Emery’s Aston Villa beat Manchester City.

Now six points ahead of their closest likely title rivals, the odds are beginning to look very good for Arsenal.

Jamie Carragher says Arsenal’s set-piece threat is ‘pretty special’

Arsenal scored their eleventh goal from a set-piece on Sunday afternoon.

Declan Rice provided a delicate delivery to the back post, Gabriel Magalhaes competed for it in the air, before Eberechi Eze acrobatically pounced on the loose ball.

The Gunners now have the lowest percentage of goals from open play this season in the Premier League. While some may say this reflects poorly on their ability to create chances from non-dead-ball situations, it’s more likely a reflection of just how good they are from set-pieces.

Jamie Carragher has the latter outlook, admitting on Sky Sports that Arsenal are ‘pretty special’ from set-pieces.

“It’s not a problem when you’re top of the league,” he said.

“There’s no doubt about that, they’re pretty special. Where the Premier League is right now, it feels like we’re going to be talking about set-pieces a lot, every weekend, a lot on Monday Night Football. There is no team better in the league, sort of primed to go on and win the Premier League, if that’s where the league is going.

“I mentioned my own team in terms of Liverpool, they don’t seem to be able to cope. This team has been built to cope in situations like this, in terms of the back four, in terms of the height of the team, the power they get.

“For a long time, I’ve said that Mikel Arteta is trying to win the Premier League like a Jose Mourinho team or a George Graham Arsenal team. There’s nothing wrong with that.

“The most important thing is winning, and right now they look in a great position, certainly after the weekend’s results, to go on and win the Premier League.”

Arsenal’s set-piece threat is sustainable

Critics of Arsenal believe that the Gunners’ set-piece prowess will dry up and that they’ll struggle to maintain this form once that happens.

However, there are plenty of reasons to suggest that this won’t be the case.

Most importantly, Arsenal have been scoring from dead-ball scenarios for several seasons now. They have continually found a way to put the ball in the back of the net from corners and free-kicks.

This threat is also sustainable simply because of the personnel that they have. Teams can plan for Arsenal’s various routines as much as possible, but there’s little they can do if Rice and Bukayo Saka are delivering exceptional corners time and time again, while Gabriel is in the box to attack them.

The Gunners may hardly need to score from open play with the rate at which they’re scoring from set-pieces.
