Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong Chak-lam said he needed to take his time getting used to playing at the National Games after advancing to the second round of the men’s singles.

The No 2 seed took little more than an hour to dispatch Duan Hao of Shanxi on Friday, sealing a 6-1, 6-3 win at the Hengqin International Tennis Centre in 64 minutes.

Speaking after his maiden win at the Games, Wong said he thought he had played well but would need more time to adjust to playing outdoors.

“I did well with my serves today but I need some adjustments with everything else going forward,” he said. “I just rested a few days after playing in Taipei. It was indoor last week, but it’s outdoor here.

“Everything was so different, so let’s take it slow, and hopefully I can keep winning. The goal is to win a medal, but there’s still a long way to go, so it’s one game at a time. The most important thing is to avoid injury and recover well.”

Playing in his first China Games, the 21-year-old Hongkonger said he had enjoyed playing with his teammates around, and expressed surprise and delight at the number of fans who had made the trip.
