Taylor Townsend confirms what she did just before walking out to face Mirra Andreeva on Ashe, 'I loved it'

Taylor Townsend’s impressive US Open campaign continued after a shocking victory over fifth seed Mirra Andreeva.

Amid the fallout from Townsend’s altercation with Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, the American appeared unbothered by the situation on court against the Russian, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

She is now through to the fourth round of a Grand Slam in singles for just the second time in her career, and will go toe-to-toe with former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova next.

After clinching her first top ten win since 2023 against Andreeva, Townsend revealed what she did before delivering the upset.

In her press conference after the match, the 29-year-old said of Arthur Ashe Stadium: “It’s always very special to me.

“The atmosphere is unlike any other, truly. It is unlike any other. When I walked out, I was not nervous at all.

“At first, I had music in, and I took my headphones out and turned my phone off because I wanted to hear everything.

“I wanted to hear the people, I wanted to hear the noise, and them call my name and for me to be able to walk out through that tunnel and see everything.

“I wanted to be 100% present in that moment, and I loved it. I am happy that I made that choice. But every time, whether it’s the third round or a Grand Slam final, it’s something that is unlike any other thing. It is special every time, honestly.”

Taylor Townsend’s record against her next opponent at the US Open

Having not dropped a set at the US Open so far, Townsend will hope to continue her flawless singles run against her next opponent, Krejcikova.

She has played the Czech star just once before, with their sole bout coming in 2017 at an ITF event in Launceston, Australia.

In that match, Krejcikova emerged victorious against Townsend after coming back from a set down to win 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 on hard court.

Eight years later, the two will meet for just the second time in their careers, with a place in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows up for grabs.
