Liverpool are set to lose long-serving coach John Achterberg, who will follow Jurgen Klopp out of the Anfield exit door.

The 52-year-old has been part of the club’s coaching staff since 2009. He joined under the regime of Rafa Benitez with a youth role.

Achterberg worked his way up the ranks and became Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach in 2011, working under Roy Hodgson, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers and Klopp. With his current deal set to expire this summer, the former Tranmere keeper has announced his departure.

Confirming his exit in an emotional statement, Achterberg said: “After 15 years at the club, I have decided with a heavy heart to leave LFC. It has been an unbelievable and great journey for me and my family. I have loved each day working at this amazing club, but after a long think I feel it could be right for me to start a new challenge.

"I would like to thank FSG for all the support during those 15 years – Mike Gordon, John Henry, Tom Werner and Billy Hogan. It has been a privilege to work for the biggest and greatest club in world football with its amazing supporters. Whether they are Scouse or non-Scouse, I loved them all worldwide.

"A massive thank you goes to our manager Jürgen Klopp. What joy he gives to all of us. Klopp has fulfilled all our dreams at LFC. He is one of [the] best managers in the history of the city, the club and world football.

"He created world-class teams with his man-management skills, he brought us back to being believers, winners, and a force in European and world football.

"For me personally, I cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for me and my family, for the trust he gave me to do my job to the best I can, the joy, inspiration and the great leadership."

Liverpool have enjoyed huge success during Achterberg’s time with the club. He has helped the side to win the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and much more.

He has also had his fair share of influence on the club’s goalkeeping department. Speaking about Achterberg’s role at Anfield, Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker said: “John has proved to be not just a great goalkeeping coach but a great guy.” He added: “We learn from each other's work. He's loved by all here.”

Achterberg’s exit is just the latest in a long line of reshuffles at Anfield this summer. Klopp is of course set to leave, and his replacement looks likely to be Feyenoord boss Arne Slot. The Dutchman will bring along his own coaching staff once his move is formalised. Elsewhere, Michael Edwards has returned as CEO of Football for Fenway Sports Group.
