Leeds United are pushing for their fourth signing of the summer as Daniel Farke eyes Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to reports. Elland Road will play host to Premier League football again and there is seemingly a recruitment push in West Yorkshire to solidify their spot.

Having already landed the double swoop from Wolfsburg for Lukas Nmecha and Sebastian Bornauw, Jaka Bijol bolstered their central defensive options after completing his move from Serie A side Udinese. With the pre-season schedule looming, Farke's side is not looking to rest on its laurels, The Athletic reports.

The outlet reports that they are pushing to sign the Magpies academy prospect and have submitted an offer worth £10million plus £2m in add-ons.

It has been suggested that it is Leeds' third proposal for his services but a response from the St James' Park club hasn't been forthcoming.

The report adds that the deal, potentially worth £12m, is close to the limit of how far Leeds will push for him with alternatives on their radar, should a move not come to fruition. It appears that one of the only remaining hurdles is the club-to-club agreement with personal terms in place.

Newcastle's window of opportunity to earn a profit from the 27-year-old is closing as he enters the final 12 months of his contract in the North East.

Longstaff has made 171 Premier League appearances, including 25 last season but the majority of his outings predominantly came from the bench.

Leeds could be among one of the busiest clubs in the transfer window as they look to avoid following the likes of Southampton and Ipswich in being relegated immediately back to the Championship in their first season back in the English top-flight.

Former Premier League manager Tony Pulis believes the recruitment this summer will hold the key to ensuring their status in the first division.

"I listen to pundits all the time saying that you need to spend billions to stay up and I disagree, you don’t have to spend billions if you’re smart," he said. "Look at Brighton and Brentford, they have invested but not with enormous amounts of money, they knew what it would take to stay in the Premier League.

"That first year obviously is difficult, but you can do it. You don't have to be so extravagant that you put the club at risk financially.

"I think there's definitely a system that you can put in place that can get you the results that you need, but you have to be smart.

"You don't have to be Man City. You don't have to be Liverpool. You don't have to like the top clubs and play like the top clubs to do it. You can do it in another way and you can be smart doing it.

"If you're clever enough, smart enough, then I don't see why a club like Leeds United can’t repeat that. It’s a fantastic football club.

"It's a one city club. The support there is just amazing. Every time a team turns up at Elland Road you know it's going to be a ferocious atmosphere.

"Daniel Farke has got to work off that and I still think that playing in a way that suits them and not suits the perception of how you should play football can cause teams problems. But again, you've got to be brave enough to do it."
