Liverpool do not look likely to do any business during the final days of the January transfer window. The Reds are in good shape as they tackle the second part of the season, sitting clear at the top of the Premier League and going well in each cup competition. The Liverpool squad is also in a great position in terms of injuries, with Curtis Jones the only player currently missing from action. As a result, it is no surprise that sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot have chosen to remain inactive during January. However, things could look very different in the summer. As things stand Liverpool are set to lose all three of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. Each would need replacing. On top of that there are other areas of the team which could do with strengthening, too. And as the Reds’ recruitment team begin to turn their attentions towards the summer, journalist James Pearce has weighed in on what he expects to happen at Anfield.Photo by Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty ImagesLiverpool set for busy summer transfer windowWhen it comes to transfers, Liverpool do tend to do things a little differently than the rest of the Premier League. It may be frustrating as a fan at times, but the Reds have a better hit-rate than virtually any of their competitors in the market.MORE LIVERPOOL STORIESAlthough that success has largely been borne out of a ‘quality over quantity’ stance, Pearce says that Liverpool look likely to do more business than usual in the summer of 2025.“I think there was always a sense that summer 2025 would be really important,” the reporter tells The Redmen TV.READ MORE: ‘Money no object’ for Liverpool as Richard Hughes and Arne Slot set summer transfer plans“Because of – and again we haven’t got the clarity on what exactly needs to be done – but imagine if you have to go and get an elite centre-back, another right-back and then if you’re losing one of the most potent attacking forces in world football, that isn’t going to come cheap,”“Then you’ve got the left-back debate, do they need another centre-back depending on if will Joe Gomez stay, will Konate sign his new contract, can Quansah get back to where he was previously? Then in midfield do they need a plan B who’s more similar to Gravenberch in terms of profile for a number six?“There’s a lot there and there are a lot of moving parts without too much clarity,” Pearce adds. “But you can look at that and common sense will tell you that it is going to be a busy summer. Everything points to it being quite a busy summer for Liverpool.”Who could Liverpool target? As Pearce rightly points out, Liverpool could be in a position where they need to sign two top centre-backs, a starting right-back, a main goal threat and a brand new left-back this summer. On top of that, the midfield question is still lingering, while it remains to be seen what Slot wants to do at centre-forward.Given their record – and the outlay such signings would take – we don’t expect all of that to get done in 2025.Liverpool still hope Van Dijk will stay, so that will remove the need for that to be addressed. If Trent goes, a right-back will surely be brought in, while there are internal ways Liverpool could replace Salah. So, in our opinion, it is more prudent that the Reds bring in a new left-back and that they secure adequate cover for Gravenberch who Slot trusts. It will be fascinating to see what Hughes and the rest of the team decide, but after a quiet couple of years, things could get busy again this summer.
