BCCI denies plans for Shreyas Iyer as ODI captain after Rohit Sharma.

BCCI Denies Plans For Shreyas Iyer As ODI Captain, Focus On Shubman Gill

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally opened on India’s ODI captaincy after Rohit Sharma, following the ongoing debate over Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. The Indian cricket board recently announced the Asia Cup squad in which Gill was named vice-captain, while Iyer’s snub led to massive uproar among the cricket experts and fans. Meanwhile, a leading Hindi daily claimed that the board has bigger plans for the Mumbai batter and is being looked at as the captaincy successor to Rohit.

However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has quashed the report. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said there was no plan for Iyer to take over ODI captaincy after Rohit Sharma.

“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions," Saikia was quoted as saying by the English daily.

The report further stated that other officials, privy to happenings in the selection meeting, also denied the report that stated Iyer’s crowning in future.

“He [Gill] averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes," another BCCI official was quoted as saying.

All Eyes On Australia Tour

While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still active in ODIs, they are expected to return to action in the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia in October. However, as learned from media reports, their future is likely to be decided only after the selectors have spoken to both about their physical and mental preparedness.

The HT reports also stated that the selection committee is not confident that Rohit’s form and fitness would hold up for the next ODI World Cup, slated for October-November 2027.

Gill’s T20I captaincy future hinges on adapting swiftly to India’s new aggressive style, while Suryakumar leads until the World Cup.
