Who Is The Thiccer Kicker? Should He Be the Rams' Starter for Playoff Race?

Football fans who still have a Sebastian Janikowski-sized hole in their hearts may soon see brighter days ahead.

The Los Angeles Rams announced Wednesday they signed kicker Harrison Mevis to their practice squad.

The move comes as Joshua Karty, Los Angeles' regular starter, is 10-of-15 on field goals and 23-of-26 on extra points. Head coach Sean McVay signaled he was open to evaluating outside options with Karty struggling.

Mevis will be a sentimental favorite thanks to the cult following he built in college at Missouri. Dubbed the "Thiccer Kicker" because of his 5'11", 243-pound frame, he had an 84 percent accuracy rate in four years with the Tigers.

As a senior in 2023, Mevis nailed a 61-yarder as time expired to upset No. 15 Kansas State.

The Carolina Panthers signed the 23-year-old as an undrafted free agent and waived him ahead of the 2024 season. He was also briefly on the New York Jets' practice squad earlier this year.

In between those stops, Mevis suited up for the UFL's Birmingham Stallions. He missed only one of his 21 field-goal attempts and connected on five from 50-plus yards.

At 6-2, the Rams are tied for the best record in the NFC West and would be seeded fifth in the playoffs right now. McVay can't afford to be too cavalier in his approach to their kicker situation.
