Chris Sutton reacts to latest Kasper Dolberg news on transfer deadline day

It’s that time of year again when clubs that haven’t planned properly are scrambling over the line to get some much-needed deals done.

Celtic are putting their hand firmly up this summer because it has been a window to forget for the champions of Scotland.

Of course, it can be salvaged by 11pm on September 1, with Brendan Rodgers needing a striker and Kasper Dolberg being a hot topic of discussion during the past week.

With Adam Idah set to join Swansea City, so everybody thought, the Hoops have been trying to secure the signature of Dolberg from Anderlecht.

But now it’s the bad news everybody has been dreading, and Chris Sutton thinks it’s not going to go down well with the locals.

Latest transfer news on Kasper Dolberg to Celtic

It has been suggested that Ajax will sign Dolberg, which knocks Celtic down once more, and Sutton thinks it’s going to have a ‘massive’ effect on the team.

The former striker told Sky Sports News (01/09/25) that the Celtic Park faithful will get ‘restless’ as a result of this news.

Never mind Celtic needing Dolberg, Sutton suggested that more than one forward player has been required this summer.

“How much will it affect Celtic? Massively,” said Sutton about the Dolberg news. “Celtic were hopeless (against Rangers). Really lacked a cutting edge, energy and creativity.

“Celtic need a centre-forward. All the talk was about Dolberg. If Celtic don’t get that over the line, then the natives are certainly going to be restless.

“It has been a really disappointing start to Celtic’s season. Out of the Champions League against a side everybody expected Celtic to beat, Kairat Almaty.

“Then, truth is, going to Ibrox, Russell Martin has had a difficult start there. Celtic fans expected Celtic to be too good for them. A lot has been made about Rangers and conceding too many chances. I think the XG was 0.15 for Rangers and 0.17 for Celtic.

“A record low for Celtic. They weren’t creative enough. They need a centre forward in badly, at least one, and they need players in those wide areas.”

Celtic miss out on ‘precise’ Dolberg to Ajax

Yes, the damage has been done, in regard to Celtic missing out on Champions League football this season, but you can still take steps forward.

Signing someone like Dolberg would have done that because he has been outstanding for Anderlecht after joining them in 2023.

The Denmark international has netted an impressive 44 goals in 96 matches for the Belgium giants, and only one player stands above him.
