Liverpool are willing to bide their time to make a move for Newcastle sensation Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward has been identified as a potential signing for the Reds this summer as they aim to bolster their attack.

Current striker Darwin Nunez has been linked with a move to Italian champions Napoli, which would leave a vacancy at Anfield. But a deal looked difficult given Newcastle were in no mood to sell, while they also put an eye-watering £150m asking price on Isak.

But it appears that Liverpool actually have a plan in place to potentially seal a late deal. The Liverpool Echo have reported that Merseyside chiefs are happy to just keep an eye on developments as it stands.

They believe that Newcastle could potentially need funds to finance an imminent spree in the market. The Magpies are chasing lucrative deals for James Trafford, Anthony Elanga and Joao Pedro - with a £100m+ deal for Isak going a long way in helping Newcastle afford those three deals.

There is also the small matter of Newcastle’s efforts to keep Isak at St James’ Park. Previous reports have suggested that the Magpies were willing to make the striker the highest-paid player in the club’s history and it is suggested that Liverpool would have no issue in matching his demands.

So, it may be wise for Arne Slot’s side to actually bide their time to see how discussions go. Meanwhile, Liverpool could also have more freedom when it comes to PSR restrictions closer to the end of the window.

Their mega money deals for Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong look set to go into last season’s figures and given the Reds’ relatively low spending in the seasons prior, they have a lot of headspace, meaning another huge fee could potentially be affordable.

Speaking last season, Eddie Howe was unable to give any guarantees that his star forward would stay in the North East. He said: "I never make those guarantees about any player and it’s not to do with Alex’s future but I’d be foolish to sit here and do anything like that.

“We want to keep our strongest players, I’ve said that ever since I’ve been here and sat in this seat. We have to try and keep our best players and bring in more good players to make us even stronger because the ambition of the club and everyone connected with the club is long-term success and that’s the only way to get that."

Meanwhile, Isak has also confirmed his stance on his future. He said: “I don’t know much, to be honest. From within the club and from our side there are absolutely no discussions. It’s just full focus on playing for me. There’s not much to say, really. I’ve commented on my situation and my security in Newcastle several times.

“It’s been written how much I love the city and the club, how well I feel there. I’m not thinking about the future. I just want to perform for Newcastle. Now we won the cup, but we want to finish strong and reach the Champions League games. That’s where my focus lies.

“There is no reason for me to think about anything else (other than Newcastle). I feel incredibly comfortable at Newcastle. The only focus I have is on playing.”
