Man United must find solution for player Gary Neville thinks is becoming a 'problem'

Yet again, Manchester United needed a goal this weekend and turned to Harry Maguire to be their hero.

Central defender Maguire has saved United in the past, but not always, and Ruben Amorim’s lack of options against Fulham on Sunday was clear and obvious.

Benjamin Sesko is ‘nowhere near’ the fitness levels required according to Gary Neville and Amorim says he ‘needs time’ to adapt to the speed of the Premier League.

But United don’t have time, and they have other issues to address – not least their static and stagnant midfield which has not been improved over the summer.

Gary Neville identifies Kobbie Mainoo problem after Ruben Amorim’s latest snub at Fulham

For the second game running, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was unused on the bench despite uninspiring performances from Casemiro and Mason Mount. As a result, Neville says it’s clear Mainoo has fallen down the pecking order under Amorim.

“I would have liked to have thought that Mainoo could step up and be that person, but it’s quite clear that at this moment in time Ruben Amorim is not having him,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.

“He starts with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, he then puts Mason Mount back in there and then he brings [Manuel] Ugarte on in front of him, which tells you he’s fourth-choice really.

“That means that they are going to need to get something sorted [in the transfer window] because it’s going to be a problem.”

Kobbie Mainoo adds to Manchester United priorities in last week of summer transfer window

If Mainoo isn’t the answer to injecting life into the United midfield, Amorim may need to identify a player who is with a week remaining of the summer transfer window.

United have spent heavily this summer on Cunha, Mbuemo and Sesko despite their lack of European football to offer prospective signings.

Still, their midfield consists of an ageing Casemiro, inconsistent Manuel Ugarte, and captain Bruno Fernandes – who showed on Sunday he isn’t always capable of dragging United out of trouble as he has done so often.

Mainoo has been linked with the United exit door before, so perhaps his latest snub could act as a reality check as to where he fits in Amorim’s plans this season.
