'It’s impossible here' - Arne Slot makes Liverpool title admission amid fight with Arsenal

Liverpool are battling to win the Premier League title having amassed a lead at the top of the table

Arne Slot trusts his players not to choke in the Premier League title-race, but is taking nothing for granted as Liverpool’s season reaches its midway point. The Reds went into the latest round of fixtures with a six-point lead at the top of the table, while still possessing a game-in-hand.

Liverpool have lost just once all season and host out-of-form Manchester United on Sunday, looking to at least maintain their advantage.

Slot suffered just one defeat himself throughout 2024, going unbeaten during his final half-season at Feyenoord. And while he admits the Reds’ lead would be enough to have one hand on the trophy in Holland, he insists it is not a comfortable one when it comes to the unpredictable nature of the Premier League.

“I have a lot of trust in the players in every aspect of football,” he said. “Their mentality, their quality on the ball, their work-rate.

“But for me it’s not about bringing it over the line because there are 20 games still left and it is still a long way to go.

“There have been so many seasons in the Premier League - and even in the league I worked in before - when so many teams who have a comfortable lead, sometimes win it and sometimes other teams come back.

“If you have this lead in the Eredivisie, you are 90 percent sure to win the league because it is nearly impossible to lose against the lower teams.

“But this week we have seen Chelsea lose against Ipswich, so that tells you it is impossible to look so far ahead. It is possible in the Eredivisie, but impossible here because there are so many good players and good teams.

“So it is a good lead - but it’s not enough to be comfortable. That’s a nice way to say it.”

He continued: “It's nice to look back at 2024 and see how we performed at Liverpool and how I left Feyenoord in a good way by winning the cup and not losing in the second-half of the season.

“If we only have draws it will be difficult! But there are no guarantees for 2025 so we just have to earn it, all these wins again, that's what we will be trying to do - starting with Sunday.”
