Sergio Busquets Announces Retirement: Farewell to a Barcelona and Spain Legend

Inter Miami surprised fans with an official statement announcing that Sergio Busquets will retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 MLS season. The Spanish midfielder, who joined the club in 2023 to reunite with Lionel Messi, will play his final matches in the league’s playoffs.

Busquets quickly confirmed the news with an emotional video on his social media. In it, he looked back on his journey from Badía to his rise with Barcelona and the Spanish National Team, thanking teammates, clubs, and fans for supporting him throughout nearly 20 years of his career.

The midfielder was a key piece of what many consider “the best Barça in history.” With the Catalan giants, he lifted Champions Leagues, LaLiga titles, Copa del Rey trophies and Supercups, while being a cornerstone of a team that revolutionized world football under Pep Guardiola.

For more than 15 years, Busquets was synonymous with tactical intelligence, balance, and silent leadership. His ability to anticipate plays and orchestrate the build-up made him one of the greatest defensive midfielders of all time, remaining loyal to his lifelong club until his move to MLS.

With Spain, Busquets played in four World Cups. His dream debut came at South Africa 2010, where he was vital in securing the world title. He also lifted the Euro 2012, extending the golden era of La Roja.

His last international tournament came at Qatar 2022, closing a brilliant cycle with over 140 caps. In 2011, he was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit, Spain’s highest sporting honor.

At 37, Busquets hangs up his boots after winning everything in Europe and leaving his mark in the United States. His legacy goes beyond trophies: he redefined the role of the defensive midfielder and cemented himself as one of the most respected players in world football.
