Saudi Arabia to Host 2034 World Cup in January Due to Ramadan

Rabat – According to The Athletic, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup in January 2035, as the original tournament period, November and December 2034, coincides with the holy month of Ramadan.

During the holiest month in Islam, Muslims are required to fast from all food and drink from sunrise to sunset. If matches are scheduled during these hours, it is particularly challenging for Muslim players to exert high physical exercise while fasting.

In years past, some international tournaments have made particular exceptions for fasting breaks to accommodate needs, but challenges remain.

During a speech at the General Assembly of European football clubs in Rome, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stressed that “the football industry needs greater flexibility regarding the scheduling of major tournaments.” Regarding not just timing but also weather, he argued that “climatic conditions must be taken into account to ensure the best possible organization.”

Infantino added that the discussion goes beyond the 2034 World Cup, pointing to a “broader reflection on the future scheduling of international competitions.” He noted that “playing in July is no longer feasible in some regions, and December is unsuitable in others, so March or October may be more appropriate in certain cases.”

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was the first to be held in winter, avoiding the extreme summer heat. It appears the 2034 edition will follow a similar path, with special consideration given to the host country’s climate and religious calendar.
