Florian Wirtz made his thoughts clear on joining Liverpool

Florian Wirtz gave a subtle nod in response to whether he was excited to be joining Liverpool. A goal in Germany’s Nations League semi-final against Portugal was not enough to help his side win, but he later gave the biggest indication yet that his move to the Premier League champions is on. Wirtz emerged in the tunnel area after the game alongside his team-mates. As he made his way through the mixed zone, where stars speak with journalists, one individual asked the 22-year-old if he was looking forward to completing his £109million switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool. No words came out of his mouth, but a glance and a telling nod gave away his thoughts. A Germany victory might have prompted a slightly more evocative response. Wirtz was clearly in little mood to further divulge his feelings after having his chances of lifting the first international trophy of his career ruined by Portugal. His goal three minutes after half-time put Germany ahead. But a five-minute double from Portugal in the second half sealed their passage into the Nations League final, where they will meet either Spain or France. Francisco Conceicao struck the equaliser before a face familar to those on Merseyside, Cristiano Ronaldo, scored the winner. Germany will play a third-place play-off against the losers of tonight's other semi-final between Spain and France, but Wirtz will then be free to complete his highly-anticipated transfer. Liverpool are widely understood to be close to concluding a a nine-figure deal for the playmaker, who has shone in the Bundesliga since making his debut aged 17. With Leverkusen, Wirtz has scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances. He helped the North Rhine-Westphalia club stun German football by winning the Bundesliga in 2023-24 under former Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso.
