David Ornstein Provides Crucial Nugget About Ruben Amorim Future

Ruben Amorim could desperately do with his Manchester United side clicking into gear after a poor start to the 2025/26 season.

Already without any European football, due to their 15th place Premier League finish and no cup successes, last season, United are already out of the Carabao (League) Cup. They drew 2-2 with fourth-tier Grimbsy, on Wednesday, and proceeded to lose the ensuing penalty shoot-out 12-11.

Following that game, Amorim declared that his players had 'spoken loudly' about what they want. It sparked concerns that he may be aboyt to quit the club, having previously offered to do so if he did not have the full commitment of the senior squad.

On Friday, a somewhat calmer Amorim spoke with the media ahead of this weekend's league meeting with Burnley, at Old Trafford. "To be really honest, every time that we have a defeat like that in the future I'm going to be like that," Amorim explained.

I'm going to say sometimes I hate my players and sometimes I love my players. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. I need to improve on that, it's going to be hard but now I'm focused on the next game."

Amorim also spoke, on Wednesday, of United having time to settle matters over the upcoming international break. Again, that led to some in the media, and supporters, suggesting the Portuguese may depart after the Burnley game.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has weighed in on the matter, and provided crucial, insider updates on the United futures of Amorim and Kobbie Mainoo.

Appearing on TNT Sport, on Saturday, David Ornstein declared 'the bare facts are Manchester United do not want to sack Ruben Amorim'.

"United are not having those conversations [about Amorim's future] yet," Ornstein added. "They want him to succeed. It's early in the season. They've made new signings and they want to give it time. I don't see any world in which, at the moment anyway, he walks away from that job and that contract."

Ornstein did qualify those comments by saying United would be 'in a world of pain' if they lose to Burnley, but added there is reluctance to make any more managerial changes after running through the likes of Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag in recent seasons.

United may consider huge Kobbie Mainoo offer

David Ornstein has also pointed out Manchester United are not keen on losing the services of Kobbie Mainoo, despite the midfielder putting in a request for a loan move away from the club.

"Kobbie Mainoo wants to leave on loan," he said, "no doubt about it. Manchester United do not intend to sanction his departure.

"You never know - if a whopping, great big, permanent transfer offer comes in, things happen in football. But they would need a replacement, as well, so that would be difficult."

Ornstein did add that United could still recruit a goalkeeper and midfielder, possibly on loan, before the summer transfer window closes, on Monday evening (September 1st).
