A clause which could impact Arsenal’s transfer pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has now reportedly become active.

Gyokeres is a name who has been spoken about throughout the summer transfer window so far with Arsenal on the lookout for a new striker before the September 1 deadline. The aim is to get a new striker in before the pre-season games, but football.london understands that the club will not panic-buy to try and beat that self-appointed deadline.

Despite reports earlier this summer of an agreement between Sporting and Gyokeres that he would be allowed to go for a discounted price this summer, the Portuguese club appear to be holding out for a price in the region of £70million. That has cause some tension between the payer and the club.

Arsenal could, however, now have a boost to their hopes of signing the player for a cheaper price. Portuguese outlet A Bola, via SportWitness claims that a clause that will see Sporting have to pay 10 percent compensation to Gyokeres’ agent if they reject an off of €60million (£51.6m) or more, becomes active from Tuesday (July 1).

It is added that Arsenal are now willing to reach that £51.6million value. Therefore, if Sporting reject that offer, then they would have to pay a fee of €6million (£6.2m) to Gyokeres’ representatives.

Sporting are, however, said to have made it clear that they are sticking to their €80million (£68.7m) valuation, and if the clause is activated by the player’s agent, then the price will revert back to Gyokeres’ €100million (£86m) release clause in his contract.

Gyokeres was not part of the first batch of Sporting players who reported for pre-season this week. He is instead due to return to training next Monday after being given extra days off due to international commitments
